Been messing around with the iPad GarageBand app again. For a while I was jamming on the guitar in the app using the different amps to record cool sound. Lately I have been converting chord progression rhythms previously played on the guitar into a Smart Keyboard track and then adding an improvisational track using the guitar or another digital instrument withing the app. The App’s instruments have a feature to play notes in a preselected scale. For example, I was jamming a Fmin Cmin Gmaj Cmin chord progression on the guitar. I used the Smart Keyboard feature to set those chords and laid down a track. Then, I created another track using the keyboard as my instrument. After selecting the minor scale option, I improvised on some notes that fit perfectly with the chord progression. I have yet to export any recordings using this new method but it’s been pretty fun to mess around with. The guitar has now become a tool to experiment with rhthym tracks and improvise over previously recorded digital tracks. Pretty cool.
